From the moment you walk into the lobby and your cases are magically whisked away by beaming bellboys, you get the feeling this place is going to be something special. It smells expensive. You know the kind of fragrance they pipe through hotels like this? The whole place oozes Ibiza luxe.
This is 5-star after all.
So let me say it straight off the bat: we had a fabulous holiday.
The layout and design of Cala San Miguel Resort are everything you’d hope for. Think chic neutrals, bamboo lampshades dancing in the breeze, soft lighting, and a glass of Spanish cava in hand while you check in. A team of fresh-faced, smiley staff are there to help with every little thing. All the right kind of vibes so far.
We were told at check-in there was no water. At first, we thought they meant the fridge, but no. No running water at all. No loo flushing, no shower, no freshening up after travelling. Not exactly the welcome you hope for at 2pm on a hot 28 degrees day.
The water wasn’t restored until around 6pm and judging by the frazzled faces at reception, I’m guessing they’d had their fair share of complaints to deal with.
We tried to stay upbeat and quickly unpacked and headed to the pool to cool off, but it was only then I clocked something else: the room wasn’t right. We’d booked a sea view, but unless you were on your tiptoes at the edge of the balcony, craning your neck, well the sea was playing hard to get. “Maybe this is what passes for a sea view?” sighed Mr B. We were hot, tired, and unpacked, so we let it slide.
Side note: we had booked a King Superior Sea View and were given a King Superior. Not the same thing.
The room itself was teeny, more ‘bijou’ than boutique with one lonely chair between two people. That said, it was beautifully styled and the bed we found out right from the first night was absolute bliss. Genuinely like sleeping on a cloud. So all was not lost.
Four pools, a DJ spinning chilled beats most afternoons, and some of the comfiest day beds I’ve ever sunk into especially at the smallest, most hidden pool which felt like our little secret.
The new Beach House area was still not open, running behind schedule. There were also three gyms (yes, three!) Mr B earned gold stars by showing up at the indoor one every single day.
We went half board through Jet2 which was a change for us as we usually go B&B .
The Cala San Miguel website says there are five restaurants. In reality? Just two seemed to be open. And the one we had access to was the rooftop restaurant. To get into the other one, you needed ‘Club Member’ access which no one had explained when we arrived. Why would they? We were in the lowly King Superior rooms. Oh! the irony of a name! We only found this out from other guests near the end of our stay. Apparently, it also included access to activities we didn’t even know existed.
I must add we didn’t go to meet our Jet2 rep the day after arrival. They were only there for about 60 mins max and tbh I find that part of a package holiday a bit naff.
The rooftop views from the restaurant were stunning. I loved sipping my morning cappuccino overlooking the cove of Puerto San Miguel. But the food? Underwhelming. I was charged a different price nearly every night as well for the same glass of rosé, and the evening meals were… meh. Even Mr B struggled to make the best of them and that says a lot.
The hanging kebabs should have been a highlight, but they were made with cheap, cuts of meat. I barely ate in the evenings and, disappointingly, we ended up eating out a couple of nights which is not ideal when you’ve already paid for dinner.
And sorry, but help yourself coffee machines and shop-bought pastries for breakfast? Not what I expect from a supposed 5-star resort.
To his credit, Mr B (very politely) raised this with the customer relations manager.
He’s not usually one to complain, so when I saw him in full feedback mode I knew he meant business. The manager seemed genuinely surprised and offered us a dinner voucher for the Club Access restaurant and wow… night and day. It was a completely different level of food and service. Why on earth this isn’t the standard across the board, I’ll never understand.
This was when I also decided to bring up the room issue. I hadn’t bothered at the start, but all these little things were stacking up. I was asked to prove we’d booked a sea view by showing our Jet2 confirmation 🙄 Eventually, after a lot of backwards and forwards, I spoke to a duty manager. He admitted they’d made a mistake and offered us €100 off our drinks bill. We chose to stay put rather than move rooms.
The setting is undeniably beautiful. The calm, tranquil atmosphere. The poolside vibes. The warm and friendly staff. Despite the hiccups, Cala San Miguel did cast its Ibiza magic on us.
Possibly, but only if we booked a Club room next time. The laid back Ibiza vibes really are a big draw and there’s something about the North of Ibiza that is utterly bewitching. It feels like it’s a million miles away from ‘party time’ Ibiza. If you want that, a taxi ride is about 40 Euros each way.
Annoyingly, the Club room option only appears if you choose bed & breakfast when booking through Jet2. Trust me, I’ve checked numerous times since to make sure I hadn’t missed the Club option the first time around.
And yes, I’ve seen the Club rooms all over the CSM Instagram, filled with gorgeous young influencers swanning around with their gifted upgrades.
Am I bitter? Nahhh… 🤣
