Surprise Soft Opening for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom!

Surprise Soft Opening for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom!

Ahead of its official opening on April 8, 2026, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has soft opened at Magic Kingdom. Here’s the latest info, what to expect from the technical rehearsals, and everything you need to know for tackling Tomorrowland if you’re visiting Walt Disney World for the peak week of Spring Break…and the next 6 months!

As a quick refresher, the recharged Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin features an enhanced opening scene with an all-new character, a friendly robot aptly named “Buddy” who was created by Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios to play a key role on the Star Command team. Buddy preps recruits for the mission in a new tutorial scene.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has also received a face lift to its Star Cruiser ride vehicles with a new design inspired by the colors of Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. Each enhanced ride vehicle now comes equipped with video monitors that provide real-time scoring updates and more.

Star Cruiser ride vehicles now feature handheld blasters for better aim, helping guests to score even more points. These enhanced handheld blasters will now include an always-on laser; they also come in two different colors per Star Cruiser to reduce confusion.

Other enhancements include new lighting, plus sound and vibration effects, so players know where they’re aiming throughout the mission. The static Z targets found in the old attraction have been upgraded with new technology that allows them to react and light up when hit.

With the soft opening starting, the construction walls/rolling secrecy shrubs are finally down and the attraction marquee is up. Here are photos Walt Disney World has shared of the sharp signage:

Although the soft openings are a surprise in the sense that they’re happening ahead of the official reopening of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin on April 8, 2026…they were more or less expected.

Playtests for the refreshed Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin ran for the last couple of weeks for select Cast Members. Those started in mid-March, and continued until this most recent weekend. That left almost two weeks before the official opening of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin on April 8, 2026.

On top of that, Walt Disney World never announced any affiliation previews for Disney Vacation Club Members or Annual Passholders after Cast Member previews conclude. Previously, our expectation was soft openings as opposed to DVC/AP and other affiliation previews.

With no announcement or teases and the clock ticking, we doubled down on that prediction a couple of weeks ago. At the time, “bet” on a week or more of soft openings for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, writing that “having the ride open as a ‘surprise & delight’ offering by Monday, March 30, 2026 would be a big win.”

And in fact, soft openings for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin began on Monday.

Our expectation at this point is that soft openings for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will continue every day until April 8, 2026. There’s no reason to believe there will affiliation previews scheduled at the last minute, or that a big media event will interrupt the soft openings towards the end (as sometimes happens). At this point, the ride has basically unofficially reopened.

For those who are unfamiliar with soft openings, they’re also known as trial operations or technical rehearsals, and are an unannounced and controlled test period. They provide an opportunity for theme parks to open an attraction prior to its official opening and conduct operations and Cast Member training in a more forgiving and lower stress environment.

Typically, soft openings are not publicized. They are a ‘surprise & delight’ experience that draw significantly fewer crowds than official openings as a result. They’re a nice perk for guests who are already in the park and the most plugged-in Walt Disney World fans.

Walt Disney World had moved away from soft openings in the last few years, before bringing them back with TRON Lightcycle Run. That was the last big attraction to offer soft openings, although Test Track 3.0 kinda-sorta did last summer, as did Disney Starlight Night Parade.

This is more similar to TRON Lightcycle Run, which had soft openings a few years ago to add much-needed capacity during Spring Break.

It’s the same story here, with this week being the peak week in the lead-up to Easter, whereas April 8, 2026 is when Spring Break season starts to wind down. Given the projected crowds this week (and reality that Big Thunder’s reopening is running behind), Magic Kingdom park operations wants Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin back online, and for all guests.

One prediction we did get wrong, at least as of the first day of soft openings, is that the soft opening of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has not been publicized…yet. This could still change, with be a pop-up in the My Disney Experience app or a press release sent out to sites like this one. That’s what happened with TRON Lightcycle Run, as the whole point with the soft opening during the heart of Spring Break season was to have the capacity online to help absorb crowds.

As of the first day of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin soft openings, there was no such notification. To the contrary, the attraction still showed up as closed for refurbishment in MDX and was not posting a wait time. You wouldn’t know it was open unless you went up to it.

Again, that could change. If it does, we’d expect wait times to increase for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. That might also happen, regardless, as word gets out among guests on the ground that the ride is actually operational.

One thing to underscore with soft openings is that the schedule is unpredictable. The attraction might reopen late each morning, close early, and be subject to increased downtime throughout the day. That’s likely part of why Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is not yet posting a wait time in the app and still is listed as closed for refurbishment–because things are still touch and go, and the attraction is subject to closure without notice. (But that’s true of every attraction.) Better for keeping guest expectations in check.

Given all of that, it’s also unknown at this point whether Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will be available for Early Entry or Extended Evening Hours this week. I’m not currently on the ground, so can’t confirm that either way at this point. I’ll be in the parks later this week, though, and plan to do rope drop and other field testing; I’ll update this accordingly if/when more is known.

Honestly, though, I doubt it’ll be necessary to prioritize Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin during those ‘extra hours,’ especially while it’s soft opening. With no Lightning Lane to slow things down and the opening being unpublicized, waits shouldn’t be too long and the line should flow pretty well.

With all of that out of the way, here are other previously confirmed details about the recharged Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom…

Lightning Lane Tier 2

Walt Disney World has confirmed that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will remain a Tier 2/Group B attraction on Lightning Lane Multi-Pass. The big question here is whether this moves the needle on Rankings & Priorities for Magic Kingdom Lightning Lane Multi-Pass?

We fully expect Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin to rocket up the rankings to #1 or #2 on Tier 2 of LLMP. Currently, ride reservations are often limited for Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The same will be true for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

It’s more a question of how limited, or if it’ll be the most limited. On a positive note, both this and BTMRR returning will provide relief, and Magic Kingdom will have the most Lightning Lane inventory since Multi-Pass launched. That should relieve a lot of strain on the system…but also might induce slightly more demand. (Our bet: it adds more supply than it does demand, and by a lot.)

Early Entry & Extended Evening Hours

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin was previously part of both the Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours at Magic Kingdom lineups. Walt Disney World recently updated both pages, seemingly confirming that the attraction will be part of those extra hours.

I’d describe this as ‘soft’ confirmation, as the attraction added when those pages were updated was actually Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring the Muppets. However, Walt Disney World did not remove Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin from either list, and refreshing them without doing that is a pretty clear signal. It also appears that the attraction will be part of After Hours from day one.

As always, these schedules are subject to change and the official site and calendar are not always the most reliable source. Accordingly, it’s possible that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin won’t be part of these ‘extra hours’ lineups immediately.

I’m really excited for the enhancements to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and look forward to reporting back from Star Command with a full review soon. Assuming it actually does join the Early Entry and Extended Evening Hours lineups, I’ll be doing field testing in both April and May 2026 and will report back with those results!
